As I travel around the country training stylists on proper fusion hair extension techniques, the most frequently asked question is: “How can I better market hair extensions to my customers?”

The first answer is right in front of you–sitting in your salon chair!

1. Look to your existing customer base.

Stylists forget that clients are looking for new and exciting ways to improve their hair. Your loyal and trusting customers look to you for advice and expert counsel. Ask clients for the opportunity! Suggest a great new alternative to their typical haircut and color. Extensions offer you endless possibilities to be creative.

2. Introduce your customers to “Piecework”.

Piecework gives customers the ability to conservatively or dramatically add volume, texture, and color in a quick add-on service that also means added revenue for you! Offer your client a few strands on each side of the head to thicken from lowlight to highlight. This add-on service for pieces takes just minutes, but can provide another 100 dollars in service cost. Once clients experience the benefits, they won’t want to be without them. Many customers will transition from “piecework” to a full head of hair extensions in no time. Extensions will be part of their regular salon visits for years to come.

3. Get involved with your local community with fundraising events.

Getting involved with your community is always a good idea! Customers want to see you are invested in the neighborhood, and that you support worthy causes close to their heart. Creating or participating in fundraising events is also another creative way to build your clientele.

One way that FNLongLocks gets involved is by supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month every October. Recently at “Yoga in the Park”, FNLongLocks donated the time of our stylists and our hair extensions in support of In the Pink in Jacksonville.

Ask us how you can get involved or offer your own ideas to other stylists in the comments below! Make your salon known for its support and follow your favorite charities on social media. Potential clients will want to support your community conscious salon.

4. Wear hair extensions yourself!

My final suggestion, and to me the most important, is “You have to wear hair extensions yourself!” Salon customers look to us as stylists to keep them current and to be on the leading edge of hair and fashion trends. LEAD THE WAY! Show off how natural and fabulous fusion hair extensions really are, and clients will follow. Not only will your customers look and feel great, but business will be booming!
